From Bits to Bots

What is Software?

At its core, all software is, is just a combination of instructions that tells a computer what to do. Both the application on your phone and the operating system it runs on are pieces of software, for example. Software works by accessing the data stored on your computer to perform various tasks. We call it soft because you can’t really hold something like Excel in your hand, whereas you can physically hold a hard disk drive.

How is it Made?

Software consists of a series of programs written in code by a team of software developers. "Code" here is a vague term that stands for any type of programming language. The instructions developers give to a computer, consequently, are written in these human-readable syntactical languages. In the next lesson we will be learning more on how a computer is able to read and translate this code.
