What is a Protocol?

Imagine you are a server. Once you have the IP address of the computing device you want to send data too, how do you access it? The answer to this question brings up an essential topic in the study of networking: Protocols. In general, protocols are a series of rules and procedures that govern the implementation of a task.

In the computing world there are many different types of protocols, but do not get overwhelmed. The one we discuss today is arguably one of the most essential: TCIP / IP.
